Illustrator & Visual Narrative (COM61340)

Lectures :

Week 4 : This weeks lecture was based on composition theory 1. The most important part in composition is the meaning you want to convey through it, meaning no scene should have no meaning. Every frame counts as a way to convey a message to the audience. The basic rules for composition , visual narrative, visual flow visual balance , and visual hierarchy. My favourites being Visual Narrative and Visual Flow.

1. Visual Narrative

This is where a composition should elevate or compliment the primary subject and relate to the overall mood.

The above picture shows the beginning part of the film while the bottom shows the ending. I feel like the compositions of this scene paints a clear contrast on the emotion of the protagonist and gives a clear message on the emotions presented.

2. Visual Flow

In this composition the viewers attention are clearly guided by the visuals presented. Normally I see this in action flows or films but its also present in dramas.

Above pictures shows scene from an 'One Piece' episode. I believe these scenes shows visual flow because as a viewer I'm drawn to the blue fire then the rest of the scene, thus it acts as a guide.

Besides that we also went through different types of shots, my favourite being the close up.

The above picture is a close up from the series ' The Legend of Korra'. This scene clearly portrays the protagonist's emotion and helps the viewer relate to the emotions being presented trough the scene.

Week 5 : This week lecture follows our studies of composition and is based on composition theory 2, specifically the construct of perspectives in a composition.

One Point Perspective

Two Point Perspective

Three Point Perspective

Isometric View

Week 6 : This weeks lecture completes our study on composition with it being based on composition theory 3, specifically fore, mid and background.

Task 2 - Composition

In this task I placed my character into a Pokemon card composition, incorporating foreground, mid ground, and background elements.

We had to :

 1. Apply colour and shadow to our  character to enhance its visual appeal.

  2. Design a composition that effectively uses foreground, and background to tell a soft narrative about your character.

  3. Create a Pokemon card layout featuring your character, including its name, powers, and ability ratings.
  4. Write a brief description of your Pokemon, explaining its abilities and characteristics.

Initial Sketching Process :

First , I tried sketching out an original character to just test out the waters.

Later, I found out we needed it to be put into a composition , thus I changed my approach towards the assignment and tried sketching multiple types of composition.

First Sketch

Second Sketch

My third sketch still trying to push this design out

After consulting with my lecturer he said my compositions weren't strong enough and referenced me to use the framed ink book as my guide. Going through the book really put me into perspective o what makes a composition cool and effective to the viewers eye. It isn't something like placing stuff where you think it will look nice , its a process of careful planning.

I decided to start fresh and use my character from task 1 since after multiple rejection I was in time constraint

Final sketches that were approved

Character Design

I was actually inspired by " The Magician ", from
Tarot Cards. From the sketch I was heavily inspired by Adventure Time when drawing the characters as I didn't want to put too much detail  into it and wanted to keep it simplistic. I also didn't want this character to be morally good , thus I made it so she has a triangular figure making her morality more complex as the magician is neither good nor bad. I used pink and green mostly for her design as both are almost complimentary colours and works well with each other as I didn't want to use green sand red and give it a Christmas Vibe.

The Process In Illustrator

Pokemon Card :

Unfortunately for me , my Illustrator App had crushed on our submission day and I had to use my screenshot that I took too get my work done on time.
After consulting with my lecture he agreed on letting me redo it and resubmit my work more clearly.
Due to the rush I do not have any progress screenshot.
