Task 3 ( Type Design & Communication )
Instructions:
<>
Task 3
In this task we were asked to create our own fonts. You will be tasked to design a limited number of western alphabets. To
begin, choose an existing font design that adheres to the direction that
you would like to head in. Study the font carefully by analysing its anatomical parts. Start with
rough sketches, explore a variety of options and upon approval begin
digitization of the drawings—software for digitization Adobe Illustrator and later FontLab. Artworks shall be printed out for critique sessions followed by
refinements. If time permits we shall generate the font for actual
use.
The Process
We were told to explore more writing styles and identify a selected
writing style that we like. Write the following letters and
punctuations: o l e d s n c h t i g , . ! # in that style, and then attempt digitising your chosen
letterforms in Adobe Illustrator.
Before doing this please view typeface construction: and this:

We were tasked with choosing one out of the 10 font provided to
dissect the letters ' h, o, g, b ' and do a detail dissection on
them, We were told to this in Adobe Illustrator ( art board size :
1000pt x 1000pt )

We has to sketch out the letters ' h, o, g, b ' using > 3mm
markers on a graph paper .

Feedback :
Week 7:
General : Ms. Vitiyaa said nothing much as she was busy checking everyone's
task 2 progress as it had to be handed in today ( 5/11/2024). She mentioned
to start progressing on our task 3 during Independence Learning Week by
following the video provided. If we were to have any question we are to
message her.
Specific : Ms. Vitiyaa reviewed my task 3 and gave me some feedback
and praised my layout. She said I focused too much on the wrong one word
and should go for something more chic and elegant. After being put on the
right track, I showed her my design and she was pleased with the
improvement and gave me some feedback on some hypanated words that I had
missed.
Week 8:
Independent Learning Week : I tired suing the >3mm markers to write
down the letters ( h, o, g, b ) on the graph paper. I took inspiration
from different fonts from the Internet and the 10 fonts we were given in
the begining of the semester. Later I dissected the letters and
deconstructed it using the ITC New Baskerville font.
Week 9:
General : Ms. Vitiyaa looked at our design of "H, O, G, B" and
gave her comments.
Specific : Ms. Vitiyaa commented on my design and taught
me some design styles. The writing style should not be too uniform or
too rigid. I started doing my fonts in Illustrator and decided to take
the building my own font route as I wanted something more
unique.
Week 10: Absent due to Medical Leave
Week 11:Absent due to Medical Leave
Week 12:
General : She gave my font a close look as I was absent on the
previous class. She touched on our final submission for the
following week and what we had to do.
Specific : She gave me feedback on my punctuations and how to
make it fit my font more as my original design was a bit too rigid
and looked alien to my letters. With her guidance I found the
right adjustment to my punctuation. She also gave me feedback on
my poster to create a more unique slang inclusing all the letter
and punctuation I created.
Reflections
Experience :
Overall, I found this project to be very beneficial to me as
a designer as it made my appreciation for the fonts I generally used to
increase as from making my own font I went through multiple faces of
rejection. It was very fun making my own font as well going through the
entire process of researching, dissecting, trial running , editing and
doing the final touches. In the beginning I found myself dreading this
task as I'm not really fond of Calligraphy because I wasn't really good at
it but I soon realised it's all about the process of experimenting and
realising each fonts detail. The digital process was very exciting as it
was my first time using FontLab and thanks to the tutorials it was a
smooth process.
Observation :
I noticed that creating a font requires an eye for detail and a mind filled
with ideas to make it look unique but elegant. I had to zoom in to make sure
no element was sticking out weirdly as my font required me to build it from
scratch using the Pen Tool.
Findings :
From this assignment I realised the important in kerning in
order to make my font more in order and tidy. Although creating a typeface was difficult, I think it was the most
instructive experience I have ever had. I was able to recognize the
distinctive characteristics and subtleties of each character by building
letters from the ground up. It also called for a combination of technical
know-how and inventiveness. Despite my prior knowledge in Illustrator, I
gained fresh perspectives and methods while creating my typeface. I discovered
that there are numerous approaches to creating a font in Illustrator. I now
understand how much work, attention to detail, and concentration it truly
takes to create a font. I also gained more proficiency in my skills in the Illustrator App
and gained a new skill into my collection which is using Font Lab.

| I'm glad I've read this book after reading a few chapters. This book
explains how to blend various types to create a specific look or mood. The
author demonstrates why certain typefaces complement one another while
others don't. The significance of hierarchy in typography is among the key
lessons I learned from this book. "Hierarchy introduces levels within
text" (Seddon, 2015). Additionally, I discovered that using fonts and
types with varying weights makes it easier for readers to browse the
entire layout. |

I had started reading The Elements Of Typographic Style by Robert Bringhurst to get more understanding view on typography. From this book I was interested in his section in where he discusses the core principles in typography.
