Week 4 : The Web ( Intro to HTML Coding)

Web Standards and Markup Basics

Web standards are a core set of guidelines used to develop websites in a consistent, accessible, and functional way. At the heart of any website is its content, and it’s essential that this content is accessible to all users, regardless of their device or ability.

To build websites that meet these standards, we use markup languages, primarily HTML and CSS.

HTML: Defining Page Structure

HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is used to define the structure of a web page. To do this, we insert code around the words and content we want to display.

HTML code consists of characters enclosed in angled brackets (<>), known as HTML elements. Most elements are composed of two tags: an opening tag and a closing tag

Reflection :

Analysing and redesigning the Bäckerei Meier website taught me the importance of aligning design with user needs. While the site had authentic imagery and a clear brand identity, it lacked structure, hierarchy, and modern usability features. Through evaluating its layout, typography, navigation, and interactivity, I learned how small changes, like improving font contrast or reorganising content flow, can significantly enhance the user experience. This assignment helped me think more critically about accessibility and mobile responsiveness, and it strengthened my ability to communicate design improvements clearly and visually. Overall, it was a valuable experience in applying UX principles to a real-world context.
