Lectures

Week 1 :

Task 1

Throughout the beginning and the middle of the semester, exercises will be prescribed at various phases of the module. These exercises will aid and benefit you in your quest to gain theoretical and practical knowledge in book design that will inform you whilst completing various phases of the module’s tasks.

All exercises prescribed are to be completed and documented (labelled, clean, clear & concise) in your e-portfolio. Please note that Task 1 will run concurrently with Task 2

The exercises are as follows:

1) Text formatting

2) Mock-up making

3) Signature folding systems (8+8=16)

4) Classical Grid structure

For text formatting, use the 3000 words in Task 2 and format it as shown in the example pdf provided. Students will use the time in class for the first 5 weeks to watch the exercise demos and complete Task 1 exercise in class. You are to focus on Task 2 at home.

1. Text Formatting

Sir told us that we have you have 3 possible options to generate the 3000-3500 words of text:

  • 1. Write the text yourself.
  • 2. Write the text with the help of AI
or fully with AI (if you do this you must declare this and you must state this in the book in the imprint).
  • 3. Use an existing story that has 3000-3500 words and adjust it for your use in this class.

  • I decided to go with the second option but not really using  AI :

    2. Mock-Up Making

We created our mock-ups by folding an A3 paper in half, since sir mentioned to us that our book had to be in between A4 size and A5 size. This way we could visualize the size of the book we wanted in person and physically.

I had a few measure ments but after folding the paper to the size I want and feeling it, I finally ended up with my final size. To top the cherry on my cake I cut the paper to my size and it have me confidence in my book size.

Later at home, sir told us to recreate the entire book to see its actual feel of its size.

    3. Signature Folding System

Today in class, we attempted this exercise and succeeded. We first begin to fold an A3 paper three times into itself, and then it became a book like structure.

Then, we numbered each page of the folded paper.

It unraveled to show just how actual book are printed out with its pages in its designated places.

Next, we once again folded the paper in the same way, but this time we stapled the center binder part of the mock-up book.

    4. Classical Grid Structure

Since, we still had some more time before class ended, sir wanted to show us the beginning part of this exercise.

I used a dummy text for this exercise as I did not have my own book content :
