Reflection :
Experience :
The Advanced Typography module has been a deeply enriching and challenging experience. I learned extensively about type design and its intricate process, from exploring typographic systems to creating a complete custom typeface. Although the workload was heavy and time-intensive, especially when building a font from scratch, the satisfaction of completing each task made it worthwhile. Under the guidance of Mr. Vinod, I was able to grow both technically and creatively. The exercises helped me understand the complexities behind letterform construction and explore new tools like After Effects, FontForge, and Illustrator.
Observations :
I’ve come to realize that typography extends far beyond picking the right font, it’s about mastering the anatomy of letterforms and using design choices to impact readability and tone. Small details like stroke width, alignment, and spacing dramatically affect how a typeface is perceived. Consistency and precision are key, and every single letter demands thoughtful attention. The critique sessions offered valuable insight into areas that needed refinement, highlighting the importance of iteration in the design process.
Findings :
Creating a cohesive and visually appealing typeface is incredibly time-consuming. I discovered that designing fonts requires not only creativity but also patience and technical understanding. Guides and grids became indispensable tools for maintaining structure and balance. I also realized how typography shapes communication, how a well-crafted typeface can influence the emotional response of an audience. This module has sparked a deeper interest in type design, and I’m motivated to continue refining these skills in future projects.
